ONGOING PROJECT

SYNOPSIS

"Sijte" is a short film that explores the life of Evelina Solsten, the youngest female reindeer herder from the southern Sámi region of Sweden. Set in the starkly contrasting beauty of Swedish summer and winter, "Sijte" captures the intricate relationship between Evelina, her family, and their reindeers. Evelina’s story raises critical questions about the future of Sámi traditions and the challenges posed by modern-day colonialism and environmental changes.

Through the lens of the misunderstood ear- carving ceremony, a sacred act that bonds Sámi and reindeer, this film invites viewers to consider what we lose by not knowing this culture, and what is at stake if these practices and the cultural and ecological balance they uphold begin to collapse.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Our creative process mirrors Evelina’s dual world: the vast, untamed landscapes of Sápmi and the intimate bond she shares with her reindeer, family and land. The camera shifts between wide, observational shots that capture life as it unfolds and abstract, poetic moments where movement and light blur the line between reality and spirit. The soundscape follows the same rhythm: Sámi-inspired joik blending with contemporary textures that reflects both tradition and transformation.

The joik becomes Evelina’s grounding voice, a safe echo of identity amid constant motion. Inspired by artists like Sofia Jannok, Mari Boine, and Colin Stetson, the music breathes like nature itself: still, raw, and powerful, embodying her journey of belonging and resilience.
